CommunityMexico CityLearn from zero waste municipalities across MexicoJalisco to Baja California: replicable pilots Mexico’s zero-waste momentum spans states and municipalities, including Jalisco, Apaxco, and Baja California programmes cited in the 2025 regional report. GAIA members help local governments design reuse, source segregation, and organics systems instead of defaulting to conventional waste contracts. What you can do - Ask your municipal environmental office whether a zero-waste diagnostic or segregated organics pilot exists locally. - Connect neighbourhood groups with GAIA Mexico partners for training on compost and recycler inclusion. Why it matters Curiosity and political determination, not expensive end-of-pipe contracts, are what the report celebrates as the region’s leading edge. CommunityZagrebPRE-KOM door-to-door collection: national leader in northern Croatia14 municipalities, 71 % separate collection PRE-KOM in Prelog operates door-to-door waste collection across 14 municipalities in northern Croatia: Prelog, Goričan, Donji Kraljevec, Sveta Marija, Donji Vidovec, Donja Dubrava, Kotoriba, Belica, Dekanovec, Domašinec, Podturen, Martijanec, Jalžabet, and Pribislavec. The network consistently ranks as Croatia's top performer in separate waste collection, averaging over 71 % and producing fewer than 73 kg of residual waste per resident: well below the national average of 247 kg. What residents do - Sort household waste into the collected fractions at source - Follow the door-to-door schedule provided by PRE-KOM for each street Why it matters In a country where national policy still favours waste-to-energy, these 14 municipalities prove that source separation at the household level works at scale: and that small municipalities can lead a large country. Repair & ReuseNicosiaKourion / Ipsonas: municipal repair stations (LIFE Zero Waste Cyprus)A Zero Waste candidate city building places to repair, not replace Kourion Municipality (formerly Ipsonas, reformed under local government restructuring) is the only Zero Waste Candidate City in Cyprus: and part of its candidacy involves establishing municipal repair stations where residents can bring broken items to be fixed. The programme is part of the LIFE Zero Waste Cyprus project, coordinated by the Department of Environment, covering a range of waste reduction measures across the municipality. What the repair stations programme includes - Fixed repair points where trained volunteers or paid repair workers assess and fix household items - Links to the LIFE Zero Waste Cyprus programme infrastructure: hazardous waste collection points, tool libraries, and repair guides - Kourion's innovative approach to PAYT (a more digitally advanced system than other municipalities) runs alongside the repair infrastructure How to engage - Kourion/Ipsonas residents: find your nearest repair station and bring items that need fixing: contact the municipality for the current list of accepted items and opening times - Repair volunteers: contact Friends of the Earth Cyprus or the municipality to join the repair volunteer programme - Other Cypriot municipalities: follow the LIFE Zero Waste Cyprus project outcomes to understand how repair infrastructure can be integrated into a wider zero waste municipality plan Why it matters Cyprus's only Zero Waste Candidate City is proving that repair stations belong in municipal infrastructure, not just at volunteer pop-ups. Every item fixed at a council-run station is one fewer purchase and one less bin of residual waste. Source & repost Shared here so you can get inspired or find action already happening near you. CommunityBerlinAbfallberatung: local waste advisor networkFree sorting advice for your postcode Every German municipality runs a kommunale Abfallberatung: waste advisors who answer practical questions about avoidance, separation, collection schedules, and special disposals. Rules share the same basics nationwide, but local bins, dates, and exceptions differ street by street. What you can do - Enter your five-digit postcode on the advisor finder and call or email your regional contact - Ask about yellow-bin contents, bio-waste, glass colours, bulky waste, hazardous items, or composting at home - Request school visits, event planning help, or materials for your tenant association or club How to participate - Use Abfallberaterin finden to reach your local advisor: consultation is free - Advisors cover waste avoidance, recycling paths, recycling centres, bin ordering, and business waste basics Why it matters One wrong item in the yellow sack can spoil a whole batch at the sorting plant. A five-minute call to someone who knows your district's rules prevents that: and often saves money on bin fees.
