Walk historic energy and transport networks

Walk historic energy and transport networks The 2026 motto NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur puts bridges, locks, power houses, rail sheds, and supply buildings in the spotlight. These places once moved people, water, goods, and power. On Open Monument Day they open so you can see how earlier networks still shape streets and rivers. What you can do - Search the programme for industry, Technik, or infrastructure tags near you - Visit a dated listing such as Dresden's Bahnbetriebswerk Dresden-Altstadt when it opens - Ask guides how the site fed a town: water, power, freight, or passenger rail - Carry the pattern into advocacy: keep repairable infrastructure visible in your own city How it works DSD invites owners to present monuments as network nodes, not only as pretty facades. Filter for technical monuments, then pick one deep listing with hours and access notes. Why it matters Energy and transport heritage make climate and mobility conversations tangible. You stand inside the systems that still underwrite daily life.

Employee-led biodiversity teams at GIZ sites

Voluntary green initiatives on company properties GIZ supports voluntary employee-led initiatives for biodiversity at offices worldwide. By 2025, biodiversity strategies with action plans will cover owned properties in Germany; rented premises are reviewed next. Combined with paper reduction (65% in Germany, 40% abroad) and longer IT device lifecycles with repair and recycling. What you can do - Start a green team at your workplace: bird boxes, native planting, or a compost corner in the staff garden - Facilities staff: audit one outdoor area for pollinator-friendly planting this season - Neighbours of large campuses: propose a joint biodiversity walk with employee volunteers How it works Awareness campaigns and knowledge-sharing connect staff across country offices; local initiatives feed into corporate biodiversity action plans. Why it matters Corporate campuses can be micro-reserves when staff, not only consultants, own the planting plan.

EMAS environmental management at GIZ German sites

Publish measurable environmental performance every year At its Bonn and Eschborn campuses, GIZ runs the EU Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), one of the strictest environmental management systems available. Annual Umwelterklärung (environmental statements) disclose energy, water, waste, and improvement measures; GIZ won the 2023 German–Austrian Environmental Management Award for its statement. What you can do - Universities, hospitals, or federal agencies: compare your campus to EMAS requirements and publish a one-page environmental statement for staff and neighbours - Facility managers: map measuring points for energy and water: GIZ targets 20% energy reduction in Germany by 2025 - Visitors to Bonn: ask your employer whether EMAS or ISO 14001 certification is on the roadmap How it works EMAS goes beyond ISO 14001 with mandatory public reporting and third-party verification. GIZ pairs EMAS in Germany with CSH handprint tools abroad. Why it matters Transparent annual accounts turn sustainability from a poster into a measurable habit.

Tend a community health garden

Garden for recovery alongside clinic neighbours The Universitätsklinikum Bonn opened a therapeutic garden where patients and staff grow herbs, play boules, and recharge outdoors. The beds support motor skills, social contact, and calm during psychiatric day care. What you can do - Read how the UKB garden therapy area was co-designed with nursing staff - Ask your local clinic or community centre whether a shared health garden could host open volunteer mornings - Replicate raised beds, seating, and sensory planting paths for mixed public and therapeutic use How it works Raised beds and a small pavilion were funded through the medical faculty's sustainability programme and built with facility teams. Therapists lead structured sessions; the layout invites quiet visits between appointments. Why it matters Health gardens blend care with ecology: hands in soil, conversation in fresh air, food harvested nearby. They show hospitals can be neighbourhood green anchors.

Visit Open Monument Day in your town

Visit Open Monument Day in your town Each year on the second Sunday in September, thousands of monuments across Germany open doors that are usually closed. Tag des offenen Denkmals® is the German contribution to the European Heritage Days, coordinated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (DSD). In 2026 the day falls on 13 September, with the motto NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur. What you can do - Filter the live programme by region, craft, industry, or family activities - Show up for a free opening, tour, or workshop near you (some tours need booking; check the listing) - Prefer sites that invite you to look over craftspeople's shoulders, restore, or learn a hand skill - Read the DSD 2026 overview for motto context and Bamberg's national opening How it works Owners, clubs, and municipal heritage teams register openings with DSD. The programme grows through late summer. Treat the day as an annual civic habit: one Sunday to meet the builders who keep roofs, locks, gardens, and workshops alive. Why it matters Heritage stays local when neighbours walk in, ask questions, and sometimes pick up a tool. Joy and skill beat guilt: you meet living buildings and the people who care for them.

Practice traditional repair crafts at monuments

Practice traditional repair crafts at monuments Open Monument Day is at its best when you meet timber framers, smiths, plasterers, and restorers at work. Schaubaustellen and craft openings turn heritage from a postcard into a shared skill. What you can do - Filter the programme for Handwerk, restoration, or Mitmach workshops - At Bamberg's national opening, look for DSD Schaubaustellen and the Markt der Möglichkeiten on Maxplatz - Ask organisers how residents can join a club, course, or volunteer day after the event - Prefer listings that let you watch or try a tool under supervision, not only walk through rooms How it works Many openings are free walk-ins. Limited workshops may need registration on the event page. Facts and hours belong to the organiser listing, not to Solarpunker. Why it matters Repair culture keeps materials in use and hands confident. A Sunday at a Schaubaustelle can be the first step toward a club, FSJ, or neighbourhood repair habit.

Spend a youth year repairing heritage

Spend a youth year repairing heritage The Jugendbauhütten offer ages 16 to 26 a full Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (or BFD) in monument care. You learn timber, metal, plaster, stone, or garden skills on real buildings, with seminars that link craft to European heritage. The programme is a DSD project carried by the Internationalen Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste (ijgd). Mobile Denkmalrettercamp weeks (for example the June 2026 camp at Kramers Gut in Helmstedt) show the same spirit: short, practical teams that repair endangered fabric. Apply for the year-round hut pathway, not a one-off camp that has already closed. What you can do - Read the Jugendbauhütten overview - Apply via the Bewerben form for the next FSJ year (do not paste personal data into third-party tools) - Prefer a hut near you, or the Internationale Jugendbauhütte Berlin for urban craft and a Schöneweide workshop campus - Ask about mobile teams if you want city-wide repair rather than a single site How it works Service usually runs about twelve months from September. You need to have finished full-time school duty and be ready for hands-on work. Placement mixes workshop days, site work, and seminar weeks. Why it matters Young builders keep endangered houses standing and often stay in craft or conservation careers. Mutual aid across generations turns heritage into a living workshop.
