Find swap, repair, and refill on the Zero Waste map

From A to Z in one city view Kiel maps Zero Waste-Orte, repair cafés, swap houses, refill taps, second-hand shops, library-of-things spots, and correct disposal points. Filter by “borrow”, “repair”, “buy used”, or “give away”. What you can do - Open the interactive map or table on the city site before your next errand run. - Suggest missing venues or corrections to zerowaste@kiel.de so neighbours benefit too. Why it matters When good options stay invisible, reusables and repairs lose to convenience. A shared map turns policy into everyday routes.

Book Zero Waste workshops for schools

Hands-on learning: not guilt slides The Umweltschutzamt and ABK run school and Kita workshops on waste sorting, papermaking, e-waste teardown, and neighbourhood Zero Waste walks. Partners include Zero Waste Kiel e.V., Ozeankind, and Verbraucherzentrale SH. What you can do - Book modules such as Papierschöpfen, Was steckt in meinem Handy?, or the Zero Waste Walk starting at the Nachhaltigkeitszentrum (ages 7+ or 12+ depending on module). - Request Umweltschutzamt support for pupil projects on avoidance, fair trade, mobility, or biodiversity. - Help your school earn Kieler KlimaSchulen recognition for year-round environmental projects. Why it matters Practical modules let pupils sort real waste, remake paper, and visit swap and repair spots instead of only reading slides.

Use Kippenorakels to keep butts off the Förde

Vote with your butt, not on the pavement Kiel installed 40 Kippenorakels: street ashtrays with a voting display. In the first six months they collected about one million cigarette butts that would otherwise litter parks and the waterfront. What you can do - Use Kippenorakels or pocket ashtrays instead of dropping butts on paths and beaches. - Join clean-ups that pair litter removal with learning about marine litter (campaign: Haltet Kiel und die Förde kippenfrei). Why it matters Filters leach toxins into soil and water; proper disposal protects the Förde and the Meeresschutzstadt network Kiel joined in 2020.

Swap at neighbourhood Tauschhäuser

Verschenken statt wegwerfen Since 2024 Kiel runs Tauschhäuser in Holtenau, Hammer, and Suchsdorf where residents leave good-condition goods for others, no cash, just circulation. Ortsbeiräte and volunteers maintain the rooms with support from the “Gemeinsam Kiel gestalten” fund. What to expect - Bring clean, usable items; browse what neighbours already shared. - Holtenau started as a pilot under the motto “give away instead of throwing away”. Why it matters District swap rooms turn “too good to bin” into free neighbourhood finds without a shop trip.
