Walk the car-free Danube embankment in Budapest
Every warm season Budapest opens the lower Pest embankment to people instead of through-traffic. Szabad a Rakpart / Nyitott rakpart turns the Jane Haining and Antall József stretches into a shared riverside for walking, cycling, picnics, sport, and community programmes, with civil organisations and volunteers helping fill the calendar.
What you can do
- Walk, cycle, or picnic on the open lower Pest embankment during the season (free entry)
- Join the traditional community table and bench painting on opening day (1 May 2026) when it is announced
- Use the calmer Antall József stretch for running paths, yoga spots, ping-pong, grills, and lounging toward Parliament views; keep the lively Jane Haining stretch for cultural pop-ups and evening energy
- Follow current programmes on Budapest Városháza (Facebook), as linked from the municipal Rakpart page
- Arrive by metro (Vigadó tér), tram, on foot from Váci utca, or by bike: parking is limited once barriers go up
How it works
The city closes the lower embankment to cars for a seasonal window (in 2026: 1 May through 23 October, excluding national holidays). From May to September on weekdays a barrier system keeps cars until about 18:00, then the evening riverside is yours. Programmes grow year by year with civil groups; check the Városháza channel for what is on this week.
Why it matters
Reclaiming the Danube bank gives Budapest a shared outdoor room in the city centre: fresher air by the water, space to meet neighbours, and a living example of streets sized for people. It is joy-led urbanism you can join the same day you arrive.
