Brussels eco-crèche: washable nappies in city day-care

Cloth nappies in every crèche: 1,400 tonnes of CO₂ avoided

The City of Brussels implemented washable nappies in municipal day-care centres (crèches), replacing single-use disposable nappies. Zero Waste Belgium documented the programme and published a comprehensive best-practice guide in 2024, giving other municipalities a clear blueprint to replicate the project.

Impact

  • Estimated 1,400 tonnes CO₂ avoided over 4-6 years
  • Approximately €80,000/year saved in waste collection costs
  • Replicable model: the best-practice guide is publicly available for other cities

Where

  • City of Brussels municipal crèches (city-wide programme); approximate pin at city centre

How to participate

  • Parents with children in Brussels crèches: ask your crèche coordinator whether washable nappies are available and how to use them
  • Municipalities and crèche operators: download the best-practice guide from Zero Waste Belgium and contact them for implementation support
  • Policy advocates: cite the €80,000/year saving in conversations with local councillors about childcare waste policy
