Green shade routes & unsealing for urban cooling

More green, less grey, cooler streets by design

Heat and sealed surfaces go together: asphalt stores warmth, while trees and unsealed soil cool the block. Cities are extending Schattenwege (shade routes), depaving yards, and co-designing green corners with residents.

What you can do

• Walk a municipal Schattenweg route and suggest the next link (Esslingen extends its shade path each summer)
• Join participation formats for new neighbourhood green (for example FairFuture co-design in Hamburg-Veddel)
• Support local Flächenentsiegelung projects that swap paving for planting (Recklinghausen Hitzeschutzbündnis model)

Why it matters

Every square metre unsealed is a small air conditioner the whole Kiez shares, biodiversity and comfort in one intervention.
