Garden for recovery alongside clinic neighbours
The Universitätsklinikum Bonn opened a therapeutic garden where patients and staff grow herbs, play boules, and recharge outdoors. The beds support motor skills, social contact, and calm during psychiatric day care.
What you can do
- Read how the UKB garden therapy area was co-designed with nursing staff
- Ask your local clinic or community centre whether a shared health garden could host open volunteer mornings
- Replicate raised beds, seating, and sensory planting paths for mixed public and therapeutic use
How it works
Raised beds and a small pavilion were funded through the medical faculty's sustainability programme and built with facility teams. Therapists lead structured sessions; the layout invites quiet visits between appointments.
Why it matters
Health gardens blend care with ecology: hands in soil, conversation in fresh air, food harvested nearby. They show hospitals can be neighbourhood green anchors.
